    Yankees hungry for WS title

The Bronx Bombers are at it again this year. After a brief hiatus from the MLB playoffs, the New York Yankees entered this year’s playoffs hungry for their 27th World Series title. After losing four games to the Cleveland Indians in the 2007 American League Division Series and missing the postseason altogether last year, Yankees GM Brian Cashman did what he could to ensure that his team would be as successful as possible this year.

Living in a fantasy world

The beginning of September marked the coming of a brand new football season, and a new football season signifies the re-emergence of fantasy football. According to Sports Illustrated writer Chris Ballard, there is an annual, nationwide participation of 20 million people in the world of fantasy sports. This year, I became one of these 20 million people who have become obsessed with this hobby. Yes, “obsessed” is the right word here– because fantasy football has the ability to turn fans against their own teams.

HOTF: Into the heart of Rocky Top

The first question the group of Ohio fans encountered after making the journey south of the Mason-Dixon Line wasn’t “How do you think your offense will perform against an elite defense?” Nor was it “Do you think Frank Solich’s past at Nebraska helped him better prepare the team for a game in a hostile environment?” In reality, the question asked over and over to the traveling Bobcats fans was “Where is Athens, Ohio?”

Speakeasy NFL Picks - Week 7

The schedule is a little thin this week with six teams on a bye week, but our picks are still filled to the brim with sarcastic and/or tasteless comments about the happening of the NFL. It’s not our fault we’re so witty.

Speakeasy NFL Picks- Week 6

Rivalry week: Ohio plays Miami, USC plays Notre Dame and most entertaining for us, the Browns play the Steelers. Everyone is saying the Browns are no match for the Steelers, but girls are no match for Brady Quinn’s feathered hair. (Get it?) Here are the standings.

A jewel on the diamond

Hayden Johnston didn’t really have a choice. Playing collegiate sports was in his blood. Both his father and older brother played football in college, so when Johnston decided to come to Ohio University to play baseball about four years ago, he was not exactly moving through uncharted waters.

Zumba class asks students to ‘ditch the workout, join the party’

Like typical college girls, we made a New Year’s resolution to get in shape. We tried to stay true to our promises by dragging each others’ butts to Ping as often as possible, but we grew tired of the monotonous routine of elliptical machines and weights, treadmills and barbells.

Senior co-captain ends final regular season

Ohio University’s Brandon Besl’s family, including a brother who played in college and an uncle who loves the sport, has been one of the biggest reasons for his success on the diamond.

Commentary: 20 (+2) Questions

Coming back from class, I flipped on SportsCenter to see Pete Bercich, the color commentator for the Vikings radio team, being interviewed. He claimed that Viking Nation was ecstatic at the possibility of signing Brett Favre. Hold the phone. I’m not thrilled about it, and I know all the other Vikings’ fans aren’t either.

What happened to hockey?

The race for playoffs is heating up in both conferences. Alex Ovechkin defies logic almost every night. The Columbus Blue Jackets could make the playoffs for the first time. But is anyone watching? If one of the most exciting hockey seasons in years happens, and no one is at the rink, does it make a noise?

Pool time

Pool is a favorite sport for many bar-goers. From beginner to advanced, all skill levels can easily join together for a quick, fun game or can play more competitively.

The road less traveled

Adetunji Adedipe has re-defined the term “good teammate” at Ohio University. The junior joined the men’s basketball team this past fall and has played an integral role for the squad this season, though his journey to collegiate basketball was a bit different.
