    Yankees hungry for WS title

The Bronx Bombers are at it again this year. After a brief hiatus from the MLB playoffs, the New York Yankees entered this year’s playoffs hungry for their 27th World Series title. After losing four games to the Cleveland Indians in the 2007 American League Division Series and missing the postseason altogether last year, Yankees GM Brian Cashman did what he could to ensure that his team would be as successful as possible this year.

Living in a fantasy world

The beginning of September marked the coming of a brand new football season, and a new football season signifies the re-emergence of fantasy football. According to Sports Illustrated writer Chris Ballard, there is an annual, nationwide participation of 20 million people in the world of fantasy sports. This year, I became one of these 20 million people who have become obsessed with this hobby. Yes, “obsessed” is the right word here– because fantasy football has the ability to turn fans against their own teams.

Bobcats break down against Kent State

It was a windy fall day in Athens, with a bit of a chill in the air. It is the kind of day that suggests that the seasons are changing, and Bobcats fans hope that it wasn’t symbolic for how their year has changed after what happened on the field after an ugly, 20-11 loss against Kent State.

HOTF: Into the heart of Rocky Top

The first question the group of Ohio fans encountered after making the journey south of the Mason-Dixon Line wasn’t “How do you think your offense will perform against an elite defense?” Nor was it “Do you think Frank Solich’s past at Nebraska helped him better prepare the team for a game in a hostile environment?” In reality, the question asked over and over to the traveling Bobcats fans was “Where is Athens, Ohio?”

Speakeasy NFL Picks - Week 7

The schedule is a little thin this week with six teams on a bye week, but our picks are still filled to the brim with sarcastic and/or tasteless comments about the happening of the NFL. It’s not our fault we’re so witty.

Bobcats destroy rival Miami

The chilly and drizzly Ohio University homecoming afternoon seemed to foreshadow how the game would play out for the visiting Miami RedHawks (0-7). After giving up an opening-drive touchdown to Miami, the Ohio Bobcats (5-2) stormed back with a vengeance, and never allowed their biggest rival to score on them again. The Cats’ 28-7 win gives them their best record through seven games since 1997, when they started 6-1, and it keeps their conference record perfect at 3-0.

Speakeasy NFL Picks- Week 6

Rivalry week: Ohio plays Miami, USC plays Notre Dame and most entertaining for us, the Browns play the Steelers. Everyone is saying the Browns are no match for the Steelers, but girls are no match for Brady Quinn’s feathered hair. (Get it?) Here are the standings.

Speakeasy NFL Picks - Week 5

A real all-star line-up awaits NFL fans during week five. Although, not everyone is unhappy. Now that Braylon Edwards is out of Cleveland, he’s finally found a home in New York, and it’s paying off for him in endorsement contracts. He will drop the ball at Times Square on New Year’s Eve. Here are the [...]

Heart of the Fan: Purple Paranoia

It’s not easy being purple, and Nick takes us through being a rabid Minnesota Vikings fan with his gameday diary against the hated Green Bay Packers.

Speakeasy NFL Picks- Week 4

Speakeasy Sports is back in business and offering their expert (and usually tasteless) opinions on this week’s NFL games.

Bobats handle Cal-Poly

The Ohio Bobcats opened the game with a bang and never looked back. Coming off a thrilling double-overtime victory at North Texas last week, the Bobcats gave themselves a winning record for the first time since 2007 after defeating the Cal-Poly Mustangs (1-1) by a score of 28-10.

Bobcats Outmuscled in Opener

With nearly 25,000 at Peden Stadium for the much anticipated match-up with Connecticut, Ohio’s last-ditch effort was not enough to overcome the Huskies’ sheer domination of both the offensive and defensive lines.

A jewel on the diamond

Hayden Johnston didn’t really have a choice. Playing collegiate sports was in his blood. Both his father and older brother played football in college, so when Johnston decided to come to Ohio University to play baseball about four years ago, he was not exactly moving through uncharted waters.

Zumba class asks students to ‘ditch the workout, join the party’

Like typical college girls, we made a New Year’s resolution to get in shape. We tried to stay true to our promises by dragging each others’ butts to Ping as often as possible, but we grew tired of the monotonous routine of elliptical machines and weights, treadmills and barbells.

Senior co-captain ends final regular season

Ohio University’s Brandon Besl’s family, including a brother who played in college and an uncle who loves the sport, has been one of the biggest reasons for his success on the diamond.
