The greed, comedy and romance of a one-act opera

The Ohio University School of Opera will tell a tale of family squabbles, unwanted romance and a charismatic “trickster” in this weekend’s performance of Puccini’s one-act play, “Gianni Schicchi.”

Written by Giacomo Puccini and directed by professors Richard Crist and Steven Huang, “Gianni Schicchi” is based on the well-known “Dante’s Inferno.” The setting is in an elaborate bedchamber in Florence in 1299, when a wealthy aristocrat named Buoso Donati, played by Peter Jarjisian, has just passed away on his deathbed. Stricken with grief, the family members of Donati surround his bedside, wiping away tears and kneeling in prayer.
